Computer Lab Power-Off Device

By Alex • Jul 5th, 2008 • Category: NewWays

What: There are tens of thousands of computer labs around the U.S. A majority of these rooms leave their computers on during off hours. This uses up a lot of energy resources.

How: Calling all engineers. Develop a system switch port that can safely trigger all computers to power down and up with the click of a button.

WHAT IS ALREADY IN PLACE (thanks jarrod)

If you were in a unix based lab you could do this yourself but using crontab to stop all the machines and using snmp and wake on lan you could power them all back up.

You can do the same in Windows with a batch script and the scheduler.

So how can we create a simple hardware device to tap into this code?  This is the question because this will make the entire process easier to buy into and implement.Who: Any engineer or entrepreneur willing to generate funding for this device.

Has this device already been created? If so email us and we can begin introducing it to Computer Lab facilitators.
